Syria was as recently as 2011 a peaceful and diverse nation with strong minorities of Christians and Muslims living together. Syria was the only secular country in the middle East. That all changed in 2012 when the US instigated an insurgency and funded rebels to overthrow the legitimate government of Bashar Al-Assad.
It was even admitted and bragged about as that US was supporting an insurgency in 2013.

This is according to whistle blower Michael Flynn, former director of Obama’s Defence Intelligence Agency, said he warned the Obama administration three years ago that the groups they were funding in Syria were actually Islamic jihadists.
The refugee crisis is the direct result of a FAILURE of US foreign policy of regime change.

The De-Facto government of Syria, the Baazistas, are hardly legitimate, that party came to power through a bloody coup in 1963 and since then, all political power has been centered on the Assad family, where journalists are deported and imprisoned for criticizing or giving an opinion against that "government", in addition, that government has a rather deplorable history of persecuting and oppressing the LGBT collective, despite the fact that this party is on the political left that they claim to be friends with minorities oppressed, LOL.
